In Vitro Fertilization
What is IVF
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) that involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body and then transferring the resulting embryo back into the uterus. IVF is usually used to treat infertility and is often recommended when other fertility treatments, such as medication or intrauterine insemination (IUI), have failed.
Typically, the IVF procedure contains the following steps:
The initial step of in vitro fertilisation entails stimulating the ovaries to create numerous eggs. Typically, fertility medicines, such as gonadotropins, are used to stimulate the creation of egg-containing follicles.
Once the follicles reach a particular size, a simple surgical procedure called transvaginal egg retrieval is performed under anaesthesia to take the eggs from the ovaries.
Fertilization: The collected eggs are then combined with sperm in a laboratory dish to produce embryos. In certain instances, sperm may be injected directly into the egg utilising the intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection method (ICSI).
The fertilised eggs are then allowed to mature in the laboratory for many days in order to create embryos. The number of embryos placed back into the uterus depends on numerous factors, including the woman's age, the embryos' quality, and the couple's choices.
The embryos are then placed back into the uterus using a tiny catheter during embryo transfer. Typically, the operation is performed in an outpatient setting and is painless.
A pregnancy test is performed approximately two weeks following embryo transfer to assess whether the IVF procedure was effective.

If you're considering IVF, it's a good idea to talk to your doctor and a fertility specialist to learn more about the procedure and to determine whether it's the right option for you.
